When a coach sends a soccer player onto the playing field, he puts his hand on his shoulder and gives him final instructions. We can understand Confirmation in a similar way. A hand is placed upon us. We step out onto the field of life. Through the Holy Spirit we know what we have to do and we have been given the power to do it. He has motivated us. His mission resounds in our ears. We sense his help. We will not betray his trust or disappoint him; we will win the game for him. Youcat #203
High School students are approaching the age where they will have to make a decision to be on this team. It is a commitment to say “yes” to their faith and we want to walk with them through preparation for this significant completion of their sacraments of initiation. Certainly, solid faith formation cannot be overlooked for it will enable them to make this commitment freely.
What to expect through the Year:
The Archdiocese of Seattle requires that candidates for Confirmation show participation in faith formation and a level of understanding of the faith. They must also be 16 years of age at the time of Confirmation. For students in the public school system, this formation takes place primarily on Sunday evenings at St. Joseph Church. These gatherings are an opportunity to make friends and have some fun while learning about the faith. This includes opportunities like Live Stations of the Cross, Backyard Ministry and Family Faith Service Sunday. For students who are attending or have attended Catholic school, this formation is built into their curriculum and is sufficient, although we do encourage participation in parish faith formation. This strengthens their relationships within the church community.
Sponsors must be selected before the orientation meeting. They will attend this along with candidate and sponsors. Both Sponsors and Candidates must attend every session.
